In his recently published article in AGRO Food Industry Hi Tech, author Joe Romano says that in order to ensure long-term success in a highly competitive global market,  food, beverage, and ingredient producers require rapid, reliable, and cost-effective, analytical solutions. By employing leading-edge technologies these organizations can more readily verify nutritional and value-added content claims, improve the efficiency of laboratory operations, meet stringent regulatory requirements, and strengthen their brand image and reputation.

Mass detection is widely recognized as a reliable method to derive more meaningful information from food and beverage samples and is an orthogonal, complementary technique to optical detection. Food scientists now have the ability to generate information-rich mass spectral data which complements data from optical detectors, such as photo diode array (PDA), tunable ultraviolet/visible (TUV), evaporative light scattering (ELS), and fluorescence (FLR). The latest mass detection technology integrates seamlessly into existing LC workflows allowing for more complete separation characterization. Additionally, anyone in the lab can easily take advantage of mass detection capabilities without any special training or knowledge.

Given the diversity of food and beverage applications for which mass detection can be applied, this evolution in technology ease-of-use and integration opens up many possibilities for food testing scientists. Some of these key application areas are described, including the analysis of vitamins, sweeteners, and juices.
