The Shodex SC-1011 Column is a piece of lab equipment that comes packed with rigid styrene/DVB-based strong cation-exchange resin designed exclusively for the separation of sugars. The columns of the Shodex SUGAR series demonstrate high performance in the separation and analysis of sugars. They are best suited to the application in food, biochemical and natural products. The Shodex SC-1011 Column uses size-exclusion chromatography as the basic mode of separation, while partition chromatography and interaction, i. e., ligand exchange between counter ions and the samples are combined with the basic mode to enable subtle separation like that of monosaccharides. Ligand exchange mode separates saccharides using this configuration difference of the complex formed between saccharides' hydroxyl groups and metal ions. The Shodex SC-1011 Column offers three types of counter ions, Ca2+, Pb2+, and Na+. The lab equipment requires only water for the analysis of neutral sugars.
To improve the separation of ionic substances, add a salt to the mobile phase. It is important that the salt is either Ca (NO3)2 or CaSO4, and its pH is in the 3-7 range. Prevent deterioration of column performance in the case of analysis of samples that contain large quantities of heavy metals by adding about 10 - 50 ppm of Ca-EDTA.

How Is Chromatography Used To Separate Sugars?
For the separation of sugars, liquid solvent is passed through a column that is filled with adsorbent material such as silica. As the solvent passes through it, different components interact with the solvent at different rates, leading to different flow rates. This leads to the separation of the individual components.
