XTerra RP8 columns are general purpose, hybrid-based, reversed-phase C8 columns that incorporate Waters innovative embedded polar group technology to improve peak shape performance for highly basic compounds. These first generation columns provide superior pH stability compared to a silica-based column.

XTerra Shield RP8 Column, 125Å, 5 µm, 4.6 mm X 150 mm, 1/pk
By overcoming traditional challenges faced when using silica-based packing materials and lab equipment, the patented Hybrid Particle Technology of XTerra columns has allowed chromatographers to break boundaries and realize the full potential of analytical and preparative separations. This Hybrid Particle Technology replaces one out of every three silanols with a methyl group during synthesis; this hydrophobicity is then distributed throughout the entire structure of the particle backbone. This leads to the rugged hybrid particle in XTerra Shield RP8 Columns, allowing them to be operated at high speeds, high temperatures, and high pH.
The XTerra Shield RP8 Column is a general-purpose, hybrid-based, reversed-phase C8 columns that incorporate Water’s patented embedded polar group technology, which improves peak shape performance when used with highly basic compounds. The first generation columns provide superior pH stability when compared with silica-based columns in similar applications. With 33% fewer residual silanols (after end-capping and bonding processes), XTerra Shield RP8 Columns offer exceptionally sharp, high-efficiency peaks.
Waters recommends the use of XTerra Shield RP8 VanGuard Cartridge, 125Å, 5 µm, 3.9 mm X 5 mm, 3/pk to extend the life of columns and protect them against contamination. The manufacturing process for XTerra Columns begins with ultrapure reagents that control the chemical composition and purity of the Hybrid particle. Each manufacturing step is conducted inside of narrow tolerances, and each column is individually tested.
This column is sold one to a package with an inner diameter of 4.6 mm and a length of 150 mm. There is a 5 µm particle size and a 125 Å pore size.
How Can I Avoid Sample Contamination In XTerra Columns?
Sample impurities often contribute to contamination on columns. In order to ensure continued high performance of columns and cartridges, certain guidelines should be followed. The use of Waters Oasis solid phase extraction sample clean-up cartridges, columns, or Sep-Pak cartridges of the appropriate chemistry can be used to clean up samples before analysis and eliminate the risk of contamination. Additionally, the use of a Waters guard cartridge of matching chemistry and particle size between the injection ad main column is recommended. It is important to use a high-performance matching guard column in order to protect the main column without compromising analytical resolution.
