eConnect Column Tag Technology
A turnkey digital solution for identifying and tracking column use and history
eConnect is a product identification technology, an electronic tag device permanently attached to an HPLC column body, and is a leap forward towards advancing today’s labs to an entirely digital platform for the future.
Specifically developed to meet the unique needs of compliant labs, the eConnect Column Tag carries all relevant identifying information to simplify the process of liquid chromatography (LC) run setup. These columns come pre-assembled with their eConnect Column Tag and are available in a large variety of HPLC columns brands and bondings.
The tag contains unique product-specific identifying information, such as part numbers, serial numbers, and product description, and offers a convenient link to the Waters website for that column–all enabled via near-field communication (NFC) technology.

Just as Waters eCord Technology (the first generation smart column technology) was designed for use with Waters ACQUITY UPLC systems, so is the eConnect Column Tag technology a part of your system solution. It is designed for ease-of use, working in conjunction with the Alliance iS HPLC System to minimize errors and improve laboratory operational efficiency. Similar to the eCord data recording device on UPLC and UHPLC columns, the eConnect-enabled HPLC Columns unlock the full system benefits of the Alliance iS HPLC System, when employed on the liquid chromatography system operating with Empower Chromatography Data System (CDS).
How eConnect device tag works with Alliance iS HPLC System and Empower CDS
- The Alliance iS HPLC System will automatically detect and read data from the eConnect Column Tag
- The Alliance iS HPLC System touchscreen will display the column-specific information the system reads from the eConnect Column Tag
- Empower Software will log the column’s unique device identifiers for each injection
- Empower Software logs all eConnect-tag-enabled column use meta data, mirroring eCord use, and history is processed
- The user can define a required column during method creation and the Alliance iS HPLC System will validate the installed column against method requirements and notify if there is no match
- Injection-based column history is searchable by the user within Empower Software
